Shutter Painting, 1990

With a grant from the NEA I lived with a group of French and American artists and writers in the chateau at La Napoule in the south of France for three months from September until the weather changed in December. At that time I was making paintings in enamel on wood, but looking for flat wood at the local DIY warehouse and not finding what I wanted, I came upon wooden "volets," wooden shutters, and an inviting array of enamel paint colors. I made a small group of paintings on these shutters planning to show them in Paris while in actuality I gave them away to various friends.
