Language Exchange, Lodz, 1990
 Invited to make a work in Lodz, Poland by the artist's group, Construction in Process, I made my way there from Munich planning to paint an impromptu painting on what I found. As I started work I found that the Polish language engaged me more than anything so I asked for a helper who did not speak English. I was assigned Pawel Sobchak, we walked in the city, ate lunch together, didn't understand, but hit on the idea of writing. We sat in public places with pens and large sheets of paper drawing and writing and pronouncing and talking about where we lived, numbers, names and so on. It became clear to others that we understood each other.
